For novels, novellas and short stories

Write the book. Keep the whole story in view.

Author keeps your manuscript, your cast and the strands woven through the book, and from them it works out where every character is, what they know and what has happened to them, at any moment. Eleven checks catch the seams. Your own AI can write with you.

Four windows from one book: a page, a character's state, the strands and a continuity check. A fictional novel.

The story engine

Where is she, and what does she know?

Mark what happens as events: a journey, an injury, a secret learned, a relationship turned. Each event has effects on a character's state. Author folds them in story order, so the state at any scene or time is worked out, not remembered, and every change says which event caused it.

  • Location, injuries, what they know, possessions, mood, relations
  • The same story always gives the same answer
  • Compare a character between two moments

Continuity

Rules, not a model.

The checks are deterministic: every issue is a rule broken, with the scenes, events and characters that break it and a scene to jump to. Dismiss one and undo brings it back. Flashbacks, dreams and memories are exempt from the presence rules.

  • Bilocation, travel too fast, the dead reappearing, age drift, order of time
  • Point of view not present, knowing too early, one object in two places
  • Travel is measured against the routes on your maps

11 rules · flashbacks, dreams and memories are exempt from presence rules

Strands and time

From the whole book to five minutes.

Strands carry the plot, the arcs, the mysteries and even the weather. See which threads carry each chapter and which go quiet, then zoom the timeline from the year down to the minute.

  • Ten kinds of strand
  • Story time or reading order, empty stretches folded away
  • Six outline templates as a ready-made structure strand

A door for your AI

Your AI writes with the book in mind.

On Premium and Max, connect Claude, ChatGPT or Grok to Geenius OS once. Your AI can read the outline, ask for a character's state before it drafts a scene, write the scene into your manuscript, save a version first and run the checks afterwards. There is no model inside Author.

  • Books, scenes, cast, strands, events, story, maps, versions, readers and export
  • Optimistic concurrency: it cannot overwrite a newer edit of yours
  • Through Geenius OS, with the permissions you set

Questions

Good questions.

What is Author?

A web app for writing books, novellas and short stories. It keeps the manuscript (parts, chapters and scenes in Markdown), the cast, the strands woven through the book and the events that change each character. From those it works out every character's state at any moment, draws a timeline, runs continuity checks, saves versions, makes beta-reader links and exports to four formats.

Is Author ready to use?

It is in early access: invite-only, with payments in test mode. The parts described on this site are built and in the app. We let people in a few at a time, so request access and we write when your place is ready.

Does Author write the book for me?

No. Author has no built-in AI. On Premium and Max you can connect your own AI (Claude, ChatGPT or Grok) through Geenius OS, and it can read the book, draft scenes into your manuscript and run the checks. What goes in the book is your decision.

Is my manuscript mine?

Yes. Scenes are plain Markdown and export to Markdown, DOCX, EPUB and a print PDF at any time. There is also a data export of everything in your account.

Do I need Geenius OS?

No. Author is a standalone app with its own account and plans. A paid Geenius OS plan includes the matching Author plan. Geenius OS profiles are an option for your cast: you can also make characters, places and objects in Author itself.

How does Author know where a character is?

From what you tell it: events with effects (a journey, something learned, an injury), the facts of the cast, and the last scene the character was in. It folds them in story order. The same story always gives the same state, and each change names its event.
